Iolite's major sources are India, Tanzania, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Namibia and Myanmar. The stone must be very carefully cut, as Iolite hss an extreme color-shifting property called pleochroism. A cube of pure Iolite will appear violet blue from one side, clear from the other and golden yellow from the top. This unique property helped guide the ancient Vikings on their legendary sea journeys. Gazing through a thin disc of iolite, they were able to tell by its shifting color the exact position of the sun.
